Grow your own Luffa sponge! The gourds are in the cucurbit family.
Transplant your luffas when night time temperatures are consistently above 18 degrees. Space them about 4-6 feet apart and provide a trellis or support for the plants to climb.
Luffa plants need regular watering, especially when they are fruiting. Make sure to water the soil, not the foliage, to prevent disease.
The gourd is ready to harvest for eating when it reaches a length of about 18 to 24 inches and stops getting larger. It is delicious in stews and stir fries.
For sponges, leave the gourds on the plant for as long as possible to let them dry. The skin will turn yellow, and should peel off easily when fully dried. Save the seeds, and try your hand at them next year!
All our seedlings are grown using with a healthy dose of BioChar. That means your seedling has everything it needs to grow nice and strong, without any other fertilizer necessary! Every time you plant one of our seedlings, you are sequestering carbon too.
Pick them up at the Picton Farmers Market starting on Sunday, May 14th.
